Preparing For Employment: Tips for Finding A Job

Bring multiple copies of your resume with you on the day of your interview. This is very important as you need to present this to  the person interviewing you.  Also, it is a good idea to review your resume before the meeting as many questions will come from this document.

TIP! When you are applying for a new job, evaluate whether the job will make you happy. Oftentimes, candidates are concerned with how much the job pays. Remember, money does not always buy happiness. Quality of life is also important.

Have questions for the interviewer before the meeting.  Make sure you are prepared with questions about the company / job during your interview. If you don’t have anything, it will look as if you are uninterested in the job.

Include a cover letter when you are applying for jobs. Cover letters should be customized to each job for which you are applying. They will tell the hiring manager how you are uniquely qualified for the position.  Make sure to include one with every resume that you send.  Not everyone does, so this will make you stand out from the crowd.

TIP! Learn how to write an effective resume specific for your industry. You may want to consider hiring a professional to help you. Certified Professional Resume Writers have the specific knowledge that hiring mangers / recruiters are looking for when it comes to your resume. Utilize this expertise to your advantage.

Keep in mind that the resume is only one facet that is considered in the hiring process.  Of course, make sure your resume is clean and neat, but your attitude during the interview is also very important. Hiring managers are looking for excited / positive people to join their teams. Consider each of your strengths and emphasize them.

Update your resume!  Everyone should always have a current resume, even if you are not looking for a new job. You never know when a great opportunity is going to present itself, so have an updated resume available at all times. It is easier to keep track of previous employment when you continuously update your resume. It won’t be as difficult to remember the key accomplishments and details about the positions.

TIP! Reach out to your friends / acquaintances / classmates / former colleagues to let them know you are job hunting. Networking is the best way to find out about unadvertised job opportunities.

Ensure your references are current.  The worst thing you can do is give the name of a reference to a potential employer before you have contacted the reference.  You do not want your references to be caught off guard.  Also, make sure you have current contact information for each reference provided.

Use Social Media Tools.  When looking for a new job, embrace social media forums.  Staying current with the latest news / information in your career is vital to your success.  Social media outlets such as LinkedIn and Twitter make this easy.  Make sure you are engaging in conversations on these sites. This will build connections with other professionals in your field and also potential employers.

TIP! Make sure you have a professional email address.  Many good resumes have been put aside by recruiters for a less than professional email address. The rule of thumb is: if you don’t want to send something to your mother from this email address, probably not a good idea to send to a potential employer.

An excellent resume will get you your dream job!!  Your resume must be structured properly to ensure that employers can easily see the value that you bring to the table. Make sure your resume is easy to read, contains details on all of your jobs for the last 10 years, and make sure to include key accomplishments.  Hiring managers want to see what you can do for them.

Remember, a great resume and your positive attitude is your key to interview success and landing your dream job!  Implementing these tips will help you find that next great opportunity.

Best of luck!

TIP! When searching for a job online, utilize all the tools available to you.  Become familiar with online job boards and specifically those relevant to your career / industry.  Professional affiliations are a great source for job leads.  Check these websites for postings in your local area.
